Compaq servers can also be purchased with Linux on them right? Compaq is now part of HP so you'd get all that Linux expertise with it. Compaq servers are, from what I hear the best choice for servers out there. We have a few here and I got to say, I wish I could afford one. I tend to agree here. Dell wants to be on the Linux bandwagon, but only if ... Kind of like the guy sitting on the fence to see which of two fighting groups gets the upperhand. I think they are going to commit to being Linux supporters ... someday. For me that day may already be too late and bringing too little with it. For a guy who started out working out of a college Dorm, he's become entrenched and tunnel-visioned. Not to mention arrogant. (Heard this guy speak lately? I talked to him once, one on one, at a convention in Vegas. I came away feeling cold, with a bitter taste in my mouth. I haven't liked the idea of owning a Dell since. Dual-Booting XP?

Is there an issue with using Lilo (or Grub) to dual boot with XP? I've never had any trouble with NT, although I didn't bother to skip the NTLoader, so I had two boot managers running at startup if I chose NT. I prefer Lilo to Grub, it's easy for me to understand, and I love the ability to change defaults permanently or temporarily from the command line (lilo -R windows;shutdown -r now).

I used to use a Norton Desktop on older Windows which gave me a similar effect. So I guess that would fall under better usability, at least for me. What's not to like about free as in beer either, Although I have bought many versions of Linux and some other OSS software. It's nice to be able to pull something down, install it and try it out. I guess that is why I've always like shareware also. It's also nice to not have to worry about losing your system to a virus/worm. Not that Linux is immune, just harder to destroy. So I guess the way I feel about Linux could be extended to OSS in general. 1) More stable than older versions of Windows (they've gotten a lot better in recent years). 2) Freedom (freedom to: think, choose, from nauseating legalalities, use, share) 3) Safety from viruses and worms. 4) The community in general. Politically? Hmm... conservative-liberal-"social-democratic"-empowerist(?) or something like that. (basically I tend more away from the right (my liberal part) but not entirely, and not everything on the left appeals to me either (my conservative part), yet I feel that we are responsible for taking take of our fellow beings (my social- democratic part) while still making people responsible for their own actions (my empowerist part - for lack of a better term)). See if you can pigeonhole that one. Oh sure I could say liberal and be done with it, but it wouldn't really fit me. Brian Densmore

You might check out Gnomoradio, which let's you listen to MP3s on other users PCs. I use Shoutcast.com for my main site to find web radio. A lot or most of the others were shut down 2 years ago by RIAA. Brian Kelsay

Don't know if this will help, but my brother (a retired EE with AT&T) thinks it's the adaptor. Probably a failed capacitor. MythTV

I've finally struggled through the mysql (no prior experience) portion of setting up a MythTV system and am now having issues with a new Hauppauge PVR-250. I have the program guide working, can run mythtvsetup, access all the menus, etc. Unfortunately, if I choose "Watch TV" all I get is channel 4. Any attempt to change channels fails, which causes me to suspect that my tuner is incorrectly defined... or the module is not loading correctly... Linux radio question

Just starting to listen to live radio using RealPlayer 10.0.2.608 w/ SuSE 9.2 (thanks to SuSE for the free 9.2 DVD ISO). Any recommendations for free Web sites and/or Linux tools for selecting stations and managing addresses for favorites? Have tried saving links to connections under "favorites" with RealPlayer, but I often get error messages indicating a possibly outdated or inaccurate link when I try to return to a saved station ... sometimes I can retrieve a live stream, sometimes not. Rick

OT: Free Wireless Internet in KC

I'm off at an art fair with my artist wife in Oklahoma City. Our hotel didn't come with free wireless internet, but the IHOP across the street did. I'm sending this E-mail from that very IHOP (although the signal was strong enough to reach out to the parking lot). I'm curious: where in KC have people found equally free (or free with a food purchase) wireless Internet access? I know some of the Panera Bread restaurants have them, but it would be interesting to find out places which already have it to schedule alternative LUG and other computer group meeting locations. I must sign off as the battery power in the laptop is getting low. Which is another thing: when you post locations with free wireless Internet access, be sure to note locations of power outlets as some of us have laptops without good batteries. This IHOP doesn't really have a table with a power outlet near it. ===== And I always thought: the very simplest words Must be enough.
