Hello everybody out there using minix- I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix; as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-sytem due to practical reasons)among other things. I've currently ported bash (1.08) an gcc (1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that i'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people want. Just finished performing the operation, so I wanted to summarize for everyone. It appears to work great! How to tell what's stock and what's added in *buntu?

My daughter's Edubuntu machine had some slight issues during the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. It was alllllmost done with the upgrade (percentage in the upper 90s) when it locked up hard and all I could do was reset it. I thought maybe I'd have to do the upgrade over but from that point on it has operated as a 10.04 machine. That was early May. Everything seems to work for the most part, although while booting up and shutting down, it has a text-based screen instead of the graphical one. Also the sound has some real hiccups, at least during login, and it's been having some stone cold lockups lately, especially while doing lengthy network-intensive operations. I could try to fix it as it stands, but at this point I'd rather do a fresh install. I've got the Edubuntu 10.04 dvd on the desk, and /home is on its own partition, so the data there will survive and I'll just have to recreate the user accounts. The thing I would like to do is get a list of the various pieces of software I've installed over and above the stock selection that ships with Edubuntu, so I can reduce the time spent redoing all that installation work. Does anyone know of a good way to get the system to tell you a list of all the .debs you have installed beyond what it shipped with? Thanks! Kendric Beachey

iftop command

Recently I had a ton of network traffic going in and out of my machine and I couldn't figure out why. A co-worker pointed me to this tool: http://www.ex-parrot.com/pdw/iftop/ It's apparently at least 4 years old, and may be well known to a bunch of folks this email will reach, but it was new to me and I found it useful, so I thought I'd share. Does anyone know of a tool that tells you which process is generating network traffic? iftop just shows which hosts it's going to/from, which was enough for me to figure out who the culprit was in this case. Synology & Fsck

If the list is coming back to life, then I've got a weird but hopefully simple problem for you: I've got a Synology DiskStation DS209 NAS that's giving me erroneous free space readings, or erroneous du output. On installation, it dedicated 2.4GB to its root partition /dev/md0 and according to du -cx / is using less than 587192K of that space. Unfortunately, however, df says it's full. bash-3.2# df -k Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on rootfs 2451064 2425764 0 100% / /dev/root 2451064 2425764 0 100% / bash-3.2# mount /dev/md0 on / type ext3 (rw,data=ordered) As a result, any number of apps from the stock firmware are prevented from running and those that do hobble along spam the logs to the point of uselessness w/complaints. The catch? I can't find a safe way to fsck it. Conventional shutdown commands to force a fsck aren't an option/are just plain missing on the box. Using tune2fs to set the check interval ridiculously low to force a check upon reboot similarly didn't work. Unfortunately, the ARM-based architecture also doesn't support booting to a removable USB device, knocking out the only other safe way I can think of to fsck it. Pop new firmware on to start from scratch? I'd love to at this point, but the firmware installation process requires 1024 megs of free disk space. Thoughts? Any ideas on how to safely get it cleaned up and accurately reporting its free space while the root filesystem is live and booted? -Sean
