So this would tend to lean toward a more generalized system requirement. The things he didn't make clear were the types of features he wants in such a system. Such as should the ticket system allow clients to log in and post tickets, or will all tickets be created from the support desk? Will clients be able to look up the status and history of their help tickets? What types of information needs to be tracked? Reporting? Summarizations? Searchability? A simple solution that just tracks and assigns help tickets that doesn't need reporting or any fancy stuff would hardly be worth paying big bucks for when a simple freeware version should do all that is needed. But if a Ticket system needs to have all the bells and whistles, then it might be time to consider shelling out some bucks. Personally I can't see paying for a help ticket system. Like Jonathon says, a quick and dirty MySQL db based system should be all anyone needs, and functionality can always be added as needed. $0.02, Brian Densmore

Way back in 2002 someone asked about a Ticket system. I am trying to evaluate some for my use. It will be for system problems, and customer complaints. We have 400 clients that interact with us almost entirely via the phone. I have created a short list version 1 of worthy possible candidates. Most likely candidates are at the top Any opinions? Does anyone locally use one? I am mostly going to be using it internally with my agents passing data from a link on the computerized phone system? So I would like to pass the login information. The agents won't be solving problems, but I would like a template of questions rather than just free flow typing the problem. Its not really asset based. linux on USB pen drive

I've been messing around with the slax linux distro on a USB pen drive. Here are the instructions to get it to work, you need at least a 256MB USB pen drive. 0) format your USB pen drive (I used a FAT32 fs, I *think* it may work with others, but I have not tested) 1) grab the Slax linux ISO and burn a bootable cd [ http://slax.linux-live.org ] 2) boot linux from the Slax CD and insert your USB pen drive 3) open a terminal 4) "cd /boot" 5) "./create_bootdisk.sh . /dev/sda1 /dev/sda SLAX" (feel free to replace /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda if your USB pen drive is located somewhere else) 6) change the boot order in your bios settings to have USB device come before your harddrive 7) remove cd, keep USB pen drive plugged in, reboot, enjoy As far as I can tell, Slax is a very clean and orderly distro with all the init scripts and packages in good order. You can find all the packages that are included at http://slax.linux-live.org/installed_packages.txt Has anyone else had any experience using any linux distro's from a USB pen drive? Anyone seen any distro's that you can put on a USB pen drive that work on the PowerPC architecture? -Chris

Ended up downloading a few distro's/ toys. Does turn out hard drive is bad, rma time. As my last MS dos boot disk had gone bad (last made in Jan 99) I ended up using both lnx-bbc and Freedos. Trying to get away from Microsoft as much as possible, but those old single disc boot floppy are handy for all the dead but with warranty drives I have bought over the years. We've had several interesting projects discussed in the list lately. I wonder if we could add a section to the kclug.org web site where we can either post write-ups and HOWTOs, or post links to personal project web pages? I'm talking about the projects that people have actually done, not the long speculative discourses about how somebody _coud_ do something like a hand-powered webserver.

Meeting Date

I just realized that the meeting was not last night, but is next Tuesday, 12/21. Duh! So, I think I can make that meeting. I'll see about getting the Q1 reservation filled out to drop off that night. BTW, I noticed that this statement on the website needs updating: "Free parking after 6:00 on the street or in the lot off of Oak on the east side of the building."
