hardware and the patience of the user, but in my experience, RPM has
never produced a noticeable load on any system I've dealt

performance and didn't take more than a second to finish.
I've got some relatively slow hardware with a full install of
Red Hat EL WS and
an rpm -qai takes less than two tenths of a second of system
time to complete
and doesn't cause any detectable lag on the box.
