At the risk of Unleashing more Dogma by a careless religious reference. ALL the Whines about altering the ways we post to the existing list. ALL the attempts at thinly disguised power grabbing. ALL the insincere clamor to Just Change Things to Some Other Way. Let's give it up for lent eh? After all- one IS to my understanding to sacrifice their deepest joy for lent. And it frankly seems as if trolling,flaming and general moaning has become some folk's all consuming joyous passion! My appearing Snarky is actually a bit more to prove a point. If you feel *MY* little screed to be not proper conduct here? Then we have established the concept of f improper conduct. . Which should be then held as such by ALL. Or do we now consider any conduct at all desirable with no regard to it's impact? I'd hoped to NOT have to say this- but kiddies- either we learn from the admittedly bad examples shown here by others before me- and choose constrictive content -as in? Posting content from now on of rational constructive value.to set a new higher standard. . Failing that you can just quit this Linux stuff and play Grand Theft Auto's "Maximum Splatter" skinned version -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

If your wife goes out to buy a car, asks your opinion which you do not give to her and she buys something you hate, you really can't say anything because she asked your opinion, your ignored her request and bought the car. She made the decision that it was something she wanted because you didn't provide any input. If she had asked your input and you said you hated it and she bought the car anyway, then you can say something about it. Same with voting on an issue. Oren set a "trick-bag for trolls" and you two are the worst offenders who've fallen not only _into_ that bag, but _through_ its _BOTTOM!!!!!_ You proved the person who stated that there are always some who will NOT moderate themselves and need it done for them!!! SAD in DEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I believe that there is such a thing as abusive moderation. I've been a victim of it in other forums/chat areas. However, in the case of this particular place where an off-topic discussion has already caused all kinds of trouble one would rationally think that ya'll would get the POINT. <> Take it elsewhere, eh??? Other than this __religious zealotry__ that's been perpetuated here, you (Luke, Leo, etc.) have ON topic knowlege that is of *great* importance and of use by others. I would really hate to see the type of "moderation" that was suggested to be implimented simply because a MINORITY would NOT _*GET*_ the _*CLUE*_!!!!! Implementing such a policy would only serve as an obstacle of innovation almost to the point of snuffing it out! Are you so myopic that you can't see this????? Therefore, I suggest that after an off-topic discussion has gone on long or heated enough to make people weary of it to the point that they gently, or not so gently, try to persuade that topic to be changed back on-topic or dropped (out of here, at least) then _SIMPLY_ use your OWN e-mail addresses (since thar ARE clearly visible and even provide LINKS) to continue your off-topic discussion so that the rest of us can ENJOY and/or learn from the ON topic posts. Luke, Leo, etc. are you getting the _CLUE_ here????????? And Oren an/or whoever, no more __trolling__ on off-topic discussions, please? This thing had died until Oren relit the fuse with the comment about Lent. ;) Oren you knew what you were doing when you set that trap and you got the results you were after. Also, anyone taking money from the government (employee, welfare, social security) can't vote. It's a conflict of interest. But that has nothing to do with Linux, which by the way, I'm happy to vote for with my feet. I just bought a book about writing Linux Device Drivers (v3 for the 2.6 kernel). Very interesting. Now to find the time to read it!

Linux scanned document handling- what software tools are recommended?

The shortest explanation is an attempt to begin archiving the flood of paper crossing my "Desk" The longer tern goal is to reduce my needed document space "in the house" So searchable indexed files are pretty much a ground up need. Human indexing is partially viable. OCR still seems to me not quite there. What is anyone using or aware of in the Linux realm that will help? There is a windows tool sold with a featherweight slot scanner called "Neat Receipts" which is what I would like a Linux replacement for. Cool has as it's claimant focus an ability to OCR and file from extracted informations as well as by date. This seems akin to related queries I have raised in the past, but this incarnation centers more on overall filing/retrieval packages as opposed to dumb "scan to file X". -- Oren Beck 816.729.3645

amorphous version control for configuration files

is anyone using mercurial to manage configuration files? The everything's-a-tip version control paradigm seems like it would be really good for managing configurations; check out a configuration close to what you want, warp it a little, check it back in and keep track of the node and its branch by naming the branch after the node's host name. http://www.selenic.com/mercurial/wiki/index.cgi/Branch -- At the bottom of this huge heap of promotional strategies, there's a product trying to chew its way out
