Size and speed do not necessarily go hand in hand. The 2.6 kernel has some speed enhancing improvements. Although the size is by default much much larger, this can be changed to some degree by compiling a custom kernel and leaving out all of the code for hardware and features you do not use. If you aren't using/emulating scsi devices there is no reason to load scsi support/drivers in the kernel. Also compiling as much of the kernel to load as modules will reduce the kernel size. This is something everyone *should* do with their kernel. Also turning off debugging and stripping debugging code from the kernel and drivers will speed up the kernel. If your system doesn't panic or crash or lock up, there is no reason to have debugging code in there. Sure it's nice to have to give to the designers *should* the system fail. But there is no doubt in my mind that the 2.0 kernel would be faster on older hardware than 2.6. Some statistics on the various kernels in regards to size: Kernel | Source Size Version | (bz2) ===========+============= 1.0 | < 1MB 1.2 | 2.3MB 2.0 | < 6MB 2.2 | 15.4MB (almost tripled) 2.4 | 30.3MB (almost doubled again) 2.6 | 35.4MB So the 2.6 kernel source is almost six times larger in *compressed* size. This is inclusive of *official* modules. I couldn't find any comparison of the compiled size of the kernels. This information taken from the kernel archives. Personally I can't see using the 2.0 except in a classroom. I wouldn't go lower than 2.2. In fact until about 9 months ago I used 2.2 for my webserver. JMHO, Brian Densmore

You will then remove the stub code and frequently a default built in module from your kernel. Generally if there is an option for hardware that you don't know what it is you don't need it in the kernel so remove it and make your kernel a lean mean computin' machine. Of course SCSI support probably not one of them if you have a CD, but the default SCSI device for the ACME Roadrunner X9000 SCSI controller could be deselected, which might save 10KB of space. So I say the "first recompile your kernel" is still a good recommendation. I say take the free laptop replacement and when it comes sell/trade it for something different. We would buy them for our products, but they needed to be tested before being installed in our equipment. Every once in a while a PS would have the capacitor in reverse polarity. Quite a show when a big capacitor blows. Less frequently the capacitor would take too much voltage with the same end result, explosion. why do you say it would have to be instantaneous? I'd tend to agree he's got a current/voltage leak in the PS, which of course could lead to a capacitor explosion. Haven't heard whether the laptop is usable now or if the adaptor is usable. If a cap went the PC or adaptor wouldn't work anymore. He's lucky the TV still works.

I forgot to mention the venerable MuLinux. I used to dabble with it on an old machine. It's floppy based too and very feature rich. It was out there back in 98 when I started. It still uses the 2.0.x series of kernels, so it's not up to date by any means. For an old laptop or desktop it's not too bad though. VNC is on one of the disks you can build. I suspect that the guts of the Inspiron 8xxx adaptors is quite the same. With perhaps minor variations for connectors. The reason being to be able to "lock-in" users to a proprietary adaptor. Much like what vendors have done with batteries. I could be wrong, it might be that each laptop has different power needs, still they could have generalized the adaptors. Just because one model is being recalled doesn't mean that other models aren't also having problems. It's generally "cheaper", to face the lawsuits than it is to fix a component with a faulty design, from a purely actuarial point of view. TV-OUT on laptop causes major damage, fire / shock

Tonight, at roughly 10:30pm 12/02/04 I proceeded to plug my tvout adapter into my laptop to watch a dvd on my tv. I had just been a video from the cam corder, so the tv ports were ok and so was the rca cable. When I plugged it in, all I saw was a white flash. 3 of my friends in the room say that the RCA cable melted, the tv smoked inside with lots of white flashing inside of it, and the RCA cable was blown out of the laptop TV-OUT connector. I with a numb arm, awoke laying on the floor. Looking at the rca cable, I see bare wire sticking out of where it melted about 2 inches melted at each end. I'm still in a state of panic/shock as to what just happened. I will be researching legal options now, as my laptop warranty ended because the dell wouldn't let me renew because of a mix up, and other things that have built up (like sending it in for fan swap to have it come back not even turning it on), now this.. a laptop I'm totally terrified of even turning on. Update to the little story, I got a junk VCR that I have, and tried to plug the RCA tv out into it. it also proceeded to fry the vcr, and new rca cable. This is a problem with the laptop. The thing has worked with the same tv in the past, only thing different is that the laptop and tv were plugged into the same powerstrip this time. Anyone have any recommendations/experiences?

It may have something to do with the inaccuracy of the older read heads on those CD drives. As for not being able to boot to CD, there was a point where the architecture changed within the PC. I recall in my first Pentium, the CD drive IDE cable plugged directly into the sound card. After most of the parts had been replaced in that PC I had plugged the replacement CD into the mobo and the drive worked better, however it still needed a boot floppy.
