Demonstrating Video at ITEC

I wanted to demonstrate how Linux can do video, even in a low end box such as mine. Obviously you cannot show stuff you have recorded on your MythTV box. However, I have found a video about FOSS and its use in poorer countries of the world, first broadcast in May 2006. It was produced by the BBC, but they have released it under the Creative Commons license and made it available for download. "The Codebreakers A BBC World Documentary on FOSS and Development" http://www.apdip.net/news/fossdoc They have it in multiple video formats including DVD ISO (bittorrent only) and OGG video. The video is 40 minutes long so if I can find another public domain video around 20-30 minutes in size, you need only hear the FOSS documentary six times instead of nine times (three times every two hours). KCLUG Meeting Oct. 17th, ITEC details?

I wanted to be at the meeting tonight. Who is bringing the CDs and will some of them be around before ITEC starts on October 25th? Setup for ITEC begins at 8am Wednesday morning (October 25th). I'll be there unloading my demo system, "How you can revive older hardware to use Linux, even OpenOffice.org 2.0!" (PIII-600Mhz, 256MB RAM, 15GB/4GB/4GB hard drives, Debian "Etch"). I'll have to trot in a CRT as I have no other type of monitors, and it helps underline the "revive older technology" argument. I can bring along a surge strip and an extension cord or two. Do they provide tables like last time? We should work out some way to display books vertically (one short level above the table level) to fit more items on the tables. They seemed to have wireless Internet at one time in the Exhibitor Hall. I'm toying with getting a "wireless bridge" so I can use the demo system's existing wired Ethernet card to demonstrate network and Internet functions. The bridge I'm looking at is a four-port switch as well, so if we have up to four systems we can link them all together using the bridge/switch, even if there is no wireless Internet in the hall. Positive Linux PR

The LDP has a document titled "Guide to Managing Media and Public Relations in the Linux Community". Booth Setup ideas

Can we ask for a convention hall table or is it just not included in the free booth? I had some ideas for setting up the booth (see attached simple JPEGs). Picture 1 is what we had last year, two tables, one on each side. Picture 2 is a different setup, using two tables but placing one on the side and one on the back, creating an open area in the middle inviting people to step inside the booth to see what we have to offer. The one on the side is the 4' table I'm bringing, leaving some open room at the back for someone to sit. The 4' table has the demo computers on it, and the table at the back has our books and CDs. JFS experiences?

We are studying B+ trees in CS352 and that has caused me to think about the design of some of the file systems in Linux. I have been faithfully served by ext3 for quite some time but am interested in the additional performance and features offered by some alternatives. I ran ReiserFSv3 on several servers in the past and was bitten by a number of corner case bugs introduced by (pre-Novell) SuSE. ReiserFSv4 is still considered experimental by its team. XFS has gained recent notoriety for losing the data of some prominent Linux figures. I remember that in the past few months, at least five people on various Planet aggregations said that XFS lost their entire partition and the recovery tools did not work. So, having heard very little about JFS, I'm interested in knowing if anyone here has been running it and has any experiences to share. -- Jason D. Clinton Something clever goes on this line.

I ran across this article about a program that will allow you to run a VMPlayer from a USB key on any Windows XP SP2 Machine. Need Linux HP Deskjet 3930 driver

The hplip page on the HP website says it supports the Deskjet 3930, but when you try to use it the only supported printers are the 3920 and the 3940, neither of which seem to work as "similar" drivers. What LiveCDs are we bringing to ITEC?

I looked back through the emails and it appears that people are ordering or (hopefully) have received the following LiveCDs: 300 Kubuntu 300 Ubuntu and someone was told to order 300 Mandriva One CDs. Does this sound right? I'm working out which graphics to put on a big sign saying "Free Linux CDs Here!" It is refreshing to see the LUG conversation turn toward a positive image for Linux by means of leaving out the negative. I still believe the best means of evangelizing an idea was used by Larry Wall as he first began telling others about the Practical Extraction and Reporting Language. Larry was a regular on the shell scripting discussions, and obviously knew shell scripting very well. Rather than simply introduce Perl as "better" than shell scripting, with no proof, thereby creating contention where there was none, he began answering shell scripting discussions in the following manner: He first answered the question with the shell script solution. Then, at the close of the email, he wrote: "But here is the Perl way of doing the same thing," and casually gave the Perl solution. He left it to the reader to make an informed decision. I firmly believe this is the reason that Perl has always had an excellent reputation, across the board. As we do this with Linux, its credibility improves, because people see us as able to competently answer tech questions, as well as casually offering a better solution, rather than seeing someone to contend with. Such patience takes time, but the perfection of patience is a friend, convinced of his own free will. -Jared

It takes more patience to advocate Linux in a positive light only, but in the end: 1. Linux is attractive to people who are patient. 2. Linux is unattractive to people who are impatient. (Are you sure you want to cater to the whole Windows userbase? Why not simply harvest the more patient ones?) 3. Linux will be associated with a continually positive message, not fear, uncertainty, and doubt like others. (I.e. we recognize FUD when we see it, but we do not propogate it.) 4. People who like to contend will have nothing to contend against but themselves, and Linux will quietly watch its adversaries beat each other up as they all learn how to be . . . quiet and patient, like Linux. Let the binary "We're better than you" message remain in the hands of those who like to contend. Linux is not "better"; that's a competitive marketing term, and Linux is built by and for engineers, not marketers. Engineers are patient, know quality when they see it, and need no marketing to convince them. In short, let the "Linux viruses" thread be a quiet gift given to people who actually adopt Linux. Keep it in the unwritten portion of the Jedi manual, so we stay away from the dark side. :-) -Jared
