Saw this on /.

After spending an entire ITEC exposition extolling the
virtues of OOo, this crops up to claim that OOo has
memory usage issues and very slow startup times.
I'll admit that I haven't used M$ Office all that
much, but I don't seem to notice a significant time
period between running OOo and starting to write a
document or create a spreadsheet.
Has anyone else who uses both noticed the kind of lag
on OOo that the article …
[View More]author describes?
The Slashdot replies also go into the point that most
people have M$ Office already, legally or illegally,
so we can't talk "free" without running up against all
the illegal copies out there which were also,
technically, "free".
One Slashdot reply says that Longhorn will make the
"free" case for OOo by preventing people from running
illegal copies of M$ software. Does anyone know about
this in more detail?

Hi,
A person I gave a Live CD to at iTech is having trouble booting with it. He
sent me the following message(see below).
Michael
The Linux Live CD locked up on my XP PC on bootup at the following line:
Starting Enterprise Volume Mangement System.
Please let me know if you have any insights/ideas about this, or need
more info first.

Looks like he may have a RAID volume he is booting to. I could be
wrong. He may need a specific kernel module that is not on the live cd,
such as for a scsi controller, ATA100 PCI card controller or something
similar. Could also be that he has SATA and that is not enabled on the
specific live cd that he has.
Need more details on the system hardware and which LiveCD, including
version, that he is using.

I'm available to help out with setup tonight (setup is tonight, right?) and can help man the booth tomorrow morning or thursday morning. Tomorrow morning would actually work slightly better for me, but I'll help whenever the LUG needs it.

Please respond to the list if you are planning on manning the booth for
ITEC.

I digitally sign my emails. If you see an attachment with .asc, then
that means your email client doesn't support PGP digital signatures.

Since we last discussed this, Ubuntu 5.10 has been released. I
downloaded it tonight and I've just discovered that there's a HUGELY
important feature on their Live CD that I think we should consider: the
"Live CD" not only includes the standard "live" Linux environment but
also a pretty Windows autorun "welcome screen" with *installers* for
OpenOffice, Mozilla Firefox and GAIM for Windows!
IMHO, this is wonderful! We can hand out a _single_ CD that promotes
using open source software on either …
[View More]Windows or Linux at the same time!
Download it and try it out! It's so pretty too.

Anyways, this is hands-down the best "newbie" CD I've ever found. The
Ubuntu guys are really deserve a lot of accolades for this...
